There’s a lovely story behind this painting: When my 90 year old mother lost her ability to drive, I would take her places. One day she wanted to buy flowers for her flower garden. Gardening was one of the last things she enjoyed in her last year of life. I had many things to do that day and fought impatience. Choosing the flowers was important to her, and because of her failing eyesight, she moved slowly so as to inspect the plants carefully. Trying not to rush her, I prayed that God would help me slow down, to be at her level and pace.; to truly be WITH her and fully present for her. That prayer was answered as an idea formed in my head to take cell phone photos of the potted plants at their height instead of at my standing height. As I tried to see the view from their vantage point, I was filled with wonder as I discovered a world I had completely missed until now. What had started out as an exercise in patience toward my mom, resulted in my realizing that joy and adventure are truly a matter of perspective.
Learn from others: truly be WITH them. Look through their vantage point and you may discover the world in a new and wonderful way.
I cherish this moment we had, for in the next season of planting flowers, her ashes were spread among them; her happy place.
