“Tree of Remembrance” Airbrushed Acrylic on Gallery Canvas. 36×46 inches I was grieving the loss of various family members October 2023. The holidays were coming and they would be missing. My heart ached as I realized it would only take a short time before they were forgotten. There are various symbolic lampstands and trees in the Bible portraying God’s remembrance through time. I felt inspired to depict this tree high on the side of a cliff, having lived through time and extreme conditions, to remain a sentinel to all those forgotten. This Tree remembers even when everyone else forgets, and lives to honor them. The cliff represents when grief leaves us feeling isolated and alone; sometimes perilously close to the slipping point ourselves. The moon represents the ‘dark night of the soul” where we can’t see evidence of the sun but must trust it is there as it’s evidence is reflected off the moon. The stars represent those who have gone on before us, and though unseen, are safe in God’s world and still shine brightly.
